Formatting a memory card wipes it clean. Everything is deleted off of it.

google for a free program named 'recuva'. As long as you didn't write anything to the card, it will do a deep scan and possibly recover your photos.

depends the type of format, with normal format it sort of make the bit avaiable again on it actually leaves the information on it.

Another very effective, and free(!), recovery program that usually works quite well, even with formatted card is Photorec.

Yep !

This one saved a huge number of "lost" files for me!
Very efficient and fast.

Not necessarily; if it was a quick format (only clearing the FAT) one should be able to recover.

I agree on the suggestions to use a recovery program; I have used 'photorec' with success on a card that was empty (according to the P&S that was used at that time).

I know there are recover programs, have use them with hard drives. I was just letting the OP know not to format with data on the card, it will delete what's on there.

That's the thing, formatting won't delete the actual data, it removes the link to it and makes the bits available again.
But the data is still there so long the bits aren't used again (write over it).

I found that out when I had to use Recuva on a card that I had formatted a few times before. I normally do not fill the entire card, so one time when I deleted stuff I got things that I had taken months back! I was impressed. Ohh, it will convert the .dng to .tiff, but they still do exactly the same thign in photoshop.

For information, all a "soft" format does is change the first character of the file name to "?". As long as you do not save anything else to the card/drive before running a recovery program, all should be well. Follow the instructions carefully, of course.

Another great free program is recuva. I tried it on a random memory card and it found files that I had deleted many months ago.

You can download it here: Recuva - Standard
There is also a paid version but the free one has no limitations.

I'm mostly just replying to this thread to weed out spambots, but I thought I'd share the helpful info for the legit members who stop by FWIW, the OP himself was a spammer.

Yep. Nothing brings out the spammers like a photo recovery question. It's like throwing a ham bone to a pack of wild dogs.
