I use ancient prime manual focus smc pentax lenses both kmount and m42, 105mm, 135mm, 150mm, and 200mm. I just got a manual focus 85mm f1.4 kmount lens by bell&howell (made by rokinon). This is a pretty sharp lens and we are excited and this is how boring we are around here.
I think primes are best but I guess that is old school now, it just depends what you want to shoot and when you want to shoot it, what kind of light you have and how fast or slow your particular lens is for that light.

You made a great move in purchasing the 50-135. You'll Learn to love it.
On the other side of the coin, I took a 3 week vacation through Italy and Greece and only took my Sigma 17-70 and a Tamron 1.4X extender. Over those 3 weeks, I only used the extender 3 or 4 times and then only because I had been carrying it.

I went with a 55-200 sigma lens early on, initially that was enough but I soon found that 200mm wasnt enough, so I had to go back for a 70-300mm but as I had already drained the budget I was left with slower glass F4-F5.6, I suggest that go you straight to a 300mm is the better option and get the maximum for your $

That is my experience with travel photos. I seldom had need for anything longer than the DA70.
