Opteka Macro 10x

Looking for a close focus lens that is not gong to deplete the bank account to much. Came across the Opteka 10x converter that screws on to
the end of my 55-300. Anybody have any experience with this ? Would certainly save removing the lens all the time.

If this is not an option is there a prime that is decent for landscape that would also serve as a good close up ( or macro ).

Thanks

John A.

I bought one of those things for about $60, 5 years ago and IMO it isn't worth a darn. Blurry, colors all over the place.

Not familiar with the Opteka, but the 18-55 lit lens will do pretty good close ups. I have a Sigma 28-80 that will focus down to 1:2. There are also 50mm prime Macros that can be had at decent prices. Sears made a 28mm that had a good close focusing ability also. Check around ebay or KEH, you can probably find something. I picked up a Pentax M 100mm f4 Macro from KEH for less than 100 dollars.

First, it's not going to give 10x magnification. I can't find what Opteka means by 10x. A front-loading optic like this is measured in dioptres, so maybe it's+10dpt. No matter what host lens is used, your working distance will be about 10cm / 4in. Magnification depends on focal length. For a +10dpt optic, M= FL/100, so on a 55-100mm lens, you range from 0.5x to 3x.

I haven't used the Opteka. I have a few no-name +10dpt optics that are fair enough and that cost US$10 each, shipped, readily available on eBay. The Opteka might be better; I have no idea how it compares with the weaker and more expensive Raynox closeup optics. If you want to blow US$20 on it, go ahead. It probably won't be terrible.
