white balance colour shift

Hi guys I was watching this video Using Color Gels to create wild background colors and trying to do same on my k5, but It does not work. It's got to be me I'm sure the white balance is as settable on a k5 as it is on his cannon .
If I do the first steps using a green gell and save as a custom wb when I shoot with out a flash and no gell the image is then magenta so that part works but when I put the green gel over the flash the image just has a green tint to it so I am missing something
I have done as he does it but I don't get the colour effect he seems to get ?
Any body care to try and give me a step by step guide?

I think I know what the problem is but can't prove it. Garry Fongs "gels" are very dense pieces of plastic and if you look at the screen shot he shows of the image taken through his "gel" it is blue with no discernible detail. the gels I was trying are my flash colour temp correction gels from Honel and are not dense enough. I need to try using a sheet of studio gel folded one over a few times and see if that is the trick.
