Viewfinder black on Kx - (and the cap is not on!)

Please help!

The viewfinder suddenly started showing nothing but blackness today. I still see the line up of information along the bottom, but there is nothing above it. It has come back a couple times, but there's no rhyme or reason to it that I can figure out.

If I press the LV button, I can focus on things doing it that way.

However, I just discovered something else too. If I use the LV way and the flash, it does not take an actual picture but just white and black objects. If I don't use the flash I CAN take a picture with the LV method.

I'm doing a 365 project so I REALLY need this camera to be operational!

Any ideas??

Is the mirror stuck in the up position?

Well, I just removed the lens and a black ring fell out. I'm guessing that that's not good. The mirror IS tilted toward the back of the camara, looking up...

Update: Once I put the lens back on I could take one picture with the flash, and then the viewfinder went to black again. I can only take a picture if I take the lens off and put it back on.

Have you tried resetting to factory default?

Yep, I tried that. Nothing changed.

Can you take a picture of the camera with the lens removed and the black ring? Maybe we could tell something with a pic.

+1. Can you see anywhere on the lens or camera where the black ring might have come from? Perhaps there are still a piece jammed in the mirror mechanism, keeping it in the up position.
