You indeed need to exchange it with the seller, they will give you a new one and they will handle things with Pentax but that's non of your business.

I would then have to pay for shipping and possibly more tax when it arrives back in Japan. Ill show it to Pentax and see what they say.

I don't know how the law works but here if you would do what you do now you void the warranty you've with the seller so if something happens with the lens afterwards you can't return it.
But that's the situation here no idea if it's the same where you bought the lens

Took it to Pentax Forums in Tokyo. They told me the camera was backfocusing (not the lens) and they changed some software settings in the camera - not the fine adjustment. Also not the firmware - they said "Deeper than firmware"

Seems to have resolved the issue though I have yet to fully experiment. The focus chart test are showing up correctly however, and I do not need to use fine adjustment for my Tamron 90mm macro anymore.

Thought I would check the metadata to see if anything else changed. Seems the CPU and DSP firmware was also upgraded when they checked the camera.

Before:

DSP Firmware Version: 1.11.23.15
CPU Firmware Version: 1.11.23.15

After:

DSP Firmware Version: 1.12.23.20
CPU Firmware Version: 1.12.23.20

With new firmware update:

DSP Firmware Version: 1.13.23.23
CPU Firmware Version: 1.13.23.23

What version are you guys using? (PhotoME is great!)

There is a possability the lens might just be fine ! This is something i discovered the other day.
Some kind fellow on here informed me of the fact that the autofocus sensor is rather large on the K5. the poor inaccurate focusing has been driving me crazy.
I did test using a D300 a D3s and the K5. I tried the nikons first which did and performed exactly as they should, in that they foucused as soon as the little focus
square hits its target. Then i did the same test with the K5 ! Trust me... it was a shock indeed and explains an awful lot.
The actual autofucus sensor isnt just bigger... its huge ! The actual autofocus sensor stretches all the way out to those two semicircle aids on the focus screen !
So its not even possable to be that precise with autofucus. Just try your lens again, but, ignore the red light. use the red square as focus conformation if you will.
Keep in mind, and use the whole of that semicircle as your focus point. If you think about it.... thats a big area ! it will focus on anything that has the highest
contrast in that area ! think of the times you have focussed on an eye ! The eye is close to the edge of your head. Its easy to see how it will miss your target
if there is something behind your subject that has higher contrast. For critical focus... use manual !
If you or anyone wishes to try this, its quick and easy. Place a coathanger on a big peice of white paper. activate you autofocus and use the tiny tip of the end of
the coat hanger. You will see it hunts and wont focus on the white but zaps into focus the instant that tiny bit falls just inside that circle.

I had a feeling it could be just as you said. Guess I'll have to learn to live with it

bad copy of 50-135mm f2.8?

I just bought a copy of this lens off a fellow photographer. It's great, just wont AF for squat...... I'm using a k10d still, the person I bought it from used it on a k-5... He says he never had any issue of the kind... I don't know whether to believe him, or believe there something wrong with my camera body instead... None the less, another let down from Pentax. Hopefully it's just my body...

50-135

Hi,

I think that the problem might not be the lens but the camera. I have got K-5 and so far every lens I had to adjust to +10.

Cheers,

I would love to be able to adjust the AF settings, but haven't been able to find my way into debug with firmware 1.31. Very frustrating.
