I'm happy that you liked my attempt at the aurora - nothing like a bit of positive feedback to make me smile!

I know the original question wasn't about 'how to' take the northern lights but I aim at ...............

Warm clothes

small flashlight

shoot in RAW - you can improve them on the computer quite a lot sometimes

tripod - always

use a remote if possible or the delay feature (to eliminate camera movement)

lowest aperture # available

IS0 200-400

Shutter speed depends on amount of light available - experiment - I've had success at 10-30 secs

If 30 secs isn't enough for a decent capture bump up the ISO.

Check for northern light activity at
Solar Terrestrial Dispatch - Leaders in Space Weather Forecasting Services

Check the weather before leaving town!

Can't give advice on the lights themselves but I am a big fan of the K-X & Sigma 10-20 combo. The majority of the pics in my signature were taken in low light conditions using a K-X and a 10-20. A combination I should never have sold. Tripod, remote control and warm boots are the essential items to go along with the lens.

Thanks Canajuneh...yeah I'm pretty lucky living in northern Alberta out in the boonies... cause I pretty much just go out in my front yard to take pictures...but if you are looking for another forecasting site for the northern lights try this one...http://astronomynorth.com/aurora-forecast/ I know its for Yellowknife but I'm about at least it helps me decide if I am staying up late
