Are you using the flash?

Is the built-in flash in the "up" position?

Is there an external flash attached?

When the camera detects a flash, it doesn't go faster than X-sync speed (1/180 sec).

Note that with flash, there is (almost) no poont in worrying about faster shutter speeds, since the speed of the flash itself is already so short. That is, even if you could shoot at 1/1000, the image would look almost exactly the same as at 1/180, even with exactly the same aperture, ISO, and flash outlut.
