i have no software

I got my K20D used and it didn't come with any software, I'm running windows 7 64bit and can't even use the codec.
I keep reading that the Pentax Utilty is free but no luck finding it, even at a cost.

That one only runs in 32bit Docrwm, so that is useless to OP. Adobe did come out with one that is for Windows 7 64 bit though. And right now I can't find it.

There are several softwares that are free to use to view and edit your photos. I use FastStone Imageviewer/editor. It does quite a bit of editing as well as viewing.

Thanks. Sorry that its the wrong one, although I seem to recall that 64 will run 32 stuff, won't it run this specifically?

Ah, now I see:

System requirement OS : Windows Vista (32 bit) and Windows 7 (32 bit)
*It is not compatible with Windows Vista (64bit) and Windows 7 (64 bit)

You can run 32 bit applications on MS Windows 7 64 bit. There is here on the Forum, a thread that addresses how to down load the Pentax application software that is setup as an update, so it will not do a fresh install. However, with the application of a switch on the command line, it will install as an original installation. In that way you can have the standard application software running on your system.

I'll try looking for it...

The link from docrwm isn't for DNG files, as stated where they list the cameras it supports, "Pentax (PEF formats only)". But the one for Adobe is for DNG files. This is the one I use on my windows 7 64 bit OS.

Can't the OP use DNG vs. PEF files when shooting?

@ photolady: agreed that Fastone is great. Very useful little piece of software.

Yes, but it has been suggested here that PEF files may not be accessible as DNG files will be in the future. And DNG is a better known format. I would rather have a lot of DNG files when I've a few years older, than PEF files that I may not be able to open. I'll see if I can find the thread about this.

Why not install for both? I agree that the Adobe format is more likely to endure and is my choice when shooting RAW.

FUD! PEF will always remain both accessible, editable as well as convertible to whatever revision of DNG will be in fashion.

Simply put:
PEF--->DNG possible now and into the foreseeable and further future
DNG-->PEF impossible now, not likely in future

I find an extra step when not needed, bothersome. And my statement was from something I read in another thread, not my own thinking.
