Are there any benefits to do an online course?

It might be more beneficial to buy a book about portraits and join a local photography club.
That's how i started.

Don't get me wrong though, you can look for a online course but i'm curious what they will teach you and how.

I found with local clubs you can have a nice day out and you have an extra reason to take photos and the face to face feedback is what you learn a lot from.
You also get it here to some extend when you upload your photo.

How do you think, is it possible to learn using only a manual, book, etc., or is it quicker and easier to find a teacher?

Well, practice, of course, but you should know something theoretically in order to do it in practice, shouldn't you?

Everything you need is on youtube start here...

But you're camera manual has a lot of infomation on what exposure is anyway...

Best option is to go outside and take a load of pictures... Use Av... Make notes... Use Tv... Make notes... Shoot in manual mode...

Use flickr.com... if you see shots you like, check the exif data or just ask questions of the photographer...

The Digital Photography School blog really helped me out when I first started learning about photography with my good ol' superzoom camera. Here's a link to their collection of articles for beginners. And yeah, the most important thing is to get out there and practice. And when you're done practicing, practice some more. :P

some are good at self study and others not, it just depends which method you favor.
