step down ring or step up ring ?

i want to go from the 58mm size of lens to a 55mm lens tube, which is it that i need--- to step up or step down ? is there a standard on this for every manufacturer ? thanks

That is step down because you are going smaller in size. Same idea as stop down for the aperture.

Step-rings are usually labeled as AA-BBmm where AA is the male thread (it screws into your lens) and BB is the female thread (your accessory screws into it). You'll want a 58-55mm step ring. Some front-mounted optical adapters come with sets of rings to accommodate various host lenses. So a screw-on adapter with 55mm rear thread may include step rings of 49-55mm, 52-55mm, 58-55mm, and 62-55mm. You may also find sets of step-up or step-down rings, usually pretty cheap as a set. I one ring costs US$4 and 7 rings cost US$10, guess which Ill buy?

not sure which ring(s) you would buy, rio rico, ( which would it be ?) i would most always buy the 1 @ $4, as it seems i usually get what i pay for--- but sometimes not. the 58 to 55 i just bought, though, was $20.00.

Try eBaying 'set of step down rings'. I've purchased from Digital Goja for instance with no problems on bits and pieces like this.
