The same thing happens with my Tamron 70-300 VC. The ficus goes from infinity to MFD and back. If it doesn't find focus it stops there and I need to press again. Stop worrying already! : D

PS Did the forums get new Smileys by any chance?

I highly doubt your lens will have an sdm failure,
I haven't heard of any failures to this point with the 200mm 2.8. And based on this survey no-one else has either.

No, SDM failure is when the lens motor will not move the focus elements, not when it misses focus.

I went to a quick search about SDM failure, and for sure it's not what experienced, knock on wood
According to that survey, it looks like the one I bought might not be a recent one according to the serial n°...

I'm not worrying that much, 'cause here in Belgium we have a two years warranty period
