Capturing pictures with camera connected to PC

I am an amateur photographer with a Pentax K-5 camera.
I want to take pictures from my Windows 7 PC using the Pentax Digital Camera Utility.
I set the USB Connection to PTP on the camera and I'm connecting it with a USB cable to the PC and the PC recognizes it as a devise.

My problem it that I can't seem to be able to capture the images using the Utility program, and I'm not sure if I'm even going about this in the right way. The program has a lot of settings that I can change but no obvious "capture image" button??

Any suggestions about what I'm doing wrong?

The 645d is the only current dslr with tethering support by Pentax.
Having said that there is a program called pktether which does what you need. Just type that into google and it should be one of the top options

Just to add to the previous post:

What you want to do is called "tethered" shooting and is a common feature in higher end, pro camears. Many studio pros shoot tethered most of the time. The Pentax software you are using is not a tethering application and will not do what you wish. Pentax does not specifically support tethering in any of its consumer DSLR cameras, only the medium format 645D. A third party company has a beta program that works in most cases. You might want to give it a try as mentioned above.

As said by Chaos_Realm, PK_Tether will do the job for you. With a Windows 7 machine you should be able to download and run the program right away (as it should have the required .NET installed already). You will find the download site here:

PK_Tether | Tethering and remote control software for Pentax DSLR cameras

I use it as well with my K200D as with my K-5 and it works fine (though not entirely without bugs). There are certain directions that must be followed; notably:

  • Turn of the top LCD display light
  • Do not use live view with PK_Tether
Further: If you search this forum for" pk_tether" you will find quite a lot of user experiences.
