Many Sigma lenses are better than their Pentax counterparts, but mostly the zooms. Pentax primes are the best!

Currently, Pentax-mount lenses are made by Tamron, Sigma, Pentax, Samyang (under various names: Phoenix, Bower, Vivitar, Spiratone, etc), HorusBennu, and Loreo (specialized lenses). Pentax-mount lenses were made until recently by Cosina (often branded as Voigtlander or Vivitar), Zeiss, and Tokina. Many other makers produced Pentax-mount lenses in the past; a very wide range of 'legacy' lenses are available. Some of us try to have one of everything, heh heh. And some of us prefer legacy glass because of bargain prices for the performance.

I prefer Pentax primes due to their (generally) small size, nice rendering both of in-focus and out-of-focus areas, and nice builds. As others have said, there are many, many different brands out there with somewhat different qualities. Certainly Sigma EX lenses are quite nice as well and there are older lenses that also are excellent.

I have a Tamron 17-50 2.8, which I like better than the Pentax 16-50 star lens. I bought both and sent the Pentax back to B&H. I also have a Sigma 85, 1.4 which is absolutely stunning for portraits. My next wish list purchase will probably be the Sigma 24, 1.8, which fills a hole in the Pentax lineup for a fast wide-ish prime. Pentax build quality is generally better, but Sigma and Tamron lenses aren't going to fall apart on you. The biggest down side to non-Pentax primes is size and weight. Pentax builds (or contracts out) beautiful small primes.
