pentax k10d lens

I was just given a pentax k10d camera from sister (she got a new one). Problem is there is only a long zoom lens for it. The regular lens for close ups broke. I am not camera proficient at all. I want to buy a normal lens for it, but don't want to spend a lot. Mostly want it for taking pictures of family. What should I get?

I would just get the kit lens:

Agree; DA 18-55mm WR is ideal as a beginners wide to normal lens.

You can probably get a copy of the kit lens fairly cheap. I have seen several listed in used equipment sections at camera stores. Most decent size camera store should have some available even if they don't sell new Pentax gear.

Any version of the kit lens should be cheap. A WR (weather-resistant) copy just sold on the Marketplace here for about US$55, which is maybe half the usual price. Your K10D is also WR so you'd have a setup you could use in almost any conditions.

I'd say the WR version of the kit lens, or alternately - if you can find it for a good price - the DA 16-45. That was a good performer on my K10.

where are you located.

Just outside toronto, at Henry's outlet center they have a box of DA and DAL 18-55 kit lenses for $39.95 each the only difference apparently between the two is one has a metal lens mount the other plastic, bit for $50 they are not a bad lens,.

The other differences are that the "L" version lacks quick shift and a hood.

Also keep in mind that there are two DA versions. I have the Samsung flavor, which as far as I can tell is a first-gen DA in every case. The second-gen DA II (also metal mount, with hood) is supposed to be an improvement over the first gen (and not having one to compare, I'll trust that it is.) The plastic DA-L is apparently optically identical to the second-gen "improved" DA.

Another vote for the kit lens.

I'd do for the 18-55 DA as it has the quick shift feature (allows you to manually focus while in autofocus mode). It is the one with the metal mount.

As kit lenses go, it is one of the better kit lenses. Better then what is offered by the other camera companies.

I think a good start for a beginners lens kit would include:

18-55 zoom
35 or 50 mm prime lens
55-300 zoom

Da 18-55 is a good little lens.
I got it with my k10. However, I bought the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 to replace it.
It's an all-round better lens with a macro feature.
Downside is that it's bigger and heavier.
