Tokina 80-200 stop down glitch

Hi,

I just received a Tokina AT-X SD 80-200 f2.8 which seems to have an aperture issue.
This lens is manual focus with an "A" aperture setting.

When I tried it out for the first time, it overexposed at any stop other than f/2.8. I eventually realized the aperture wasn't closing down as it should.

The camera body shows aperture and exposure data, but when the aperture is set to f/3.2, f/3.5 or f/4.0 the lens doesn't stop down. Not until an indicated f/4.5 does the iris begin to close down noticeably. From f/4.5 on, the iris closes down - but appears to be open about 1 stop wider than is indicated on the camera body.

When I use the aperture ring manually, the iris stops down as it should.

The aperture blades are dry and snappy. I've cleaned the contacts and tried this lens on two different dslr bodies with the same result.

Any ideas?

Edit (July, 2012): Yeah, that's what I figured.

I returned the lens. Thanks to everyone who looked.
