Just got a K-x, help me find some lens!

Hello!

I got a K-x for the astounding value of 130 on an auction site.

Now I need some lenses to experiment with. Money is pretty tight so I'd be looking for stuff around or under 100 dollars.

What do you guys recommend? I'd like a decent macro 70-210 or 100-300 would be really nice. I don't really have a preference for focus length. I had a Rebel XS, but I lost it. This was awhile ago, and I couldn't really afford the lenses for that, so I'm super excited I have a better camera, for cheap.

I've seen a bunch of Tamrons, Tokinas, the like on ebay. Does anyone have any other suggestions? The ones that I have found for cheap seem to be poorly reviewed. A good 35 or 28 - 80 mm general use lens might be good too.

Thank you all!

*lenses (for the title lol)

I use Tamron Adaptal II 70-210 Macro - pretty satisfied with that. Not using too much, because have Quantarray AF 70-300mm LDO Macro.
Tamron is better. :-)

For 28-80 I have Vivitar 28-80mm 1:2.8-3.8...good lens, but slightly blurry wide open.
Each of them costs less than 100$.
Recently I was impressed by Vivitar 70-150mm Macro (Close Focusing)...highly recommended.
Good luck!

Congrats on your new acquisition! The K-x is an excellent camera! DxO Mark reviewed the camera and scored it really high, it's dynamic range was good enough for people to compare it to the Canon 5D MkII. Anyways you have quite a few choices. You can go with manual glass from pentax and they can vary in price from about $40-$150 for good beginning lenses. In fact if you're not worried about cosmetically scarred items theres a Pentax F 50 1.7 I think going for $150 in the market place.

Here are two stalwarts in the Pentax community at fair prices:
Here is another great lens, that I have a copy of and I can say that it's a great lens.

Have a look around and see what you like, take a look in the photo gallery too and see what lenses are used. Good luck and most importantly, have FUN!

Thank you very much!

Do you think I should get an auto focus instead? Are there any cheaper lenses like that?

Also, where can I go lens hunting? I've tried looking around ebay, everything seems to be cheaper lenses for more expensive than the lenses would indicate.

I found one that's not too bad, Tamron 100 mm-300 mm F/5.0-6.3 Lens For Pentax.

Is this any good? That is definitely affordable, the guy above said that Tamron is good for Pentax. Any help would be lovely.

I would seriously look at the market place on the forum. It's a great place and I've bought a lot go my equipment here for fair deals and better condition than on ebay. :-)

Congrats on the bargain.

<$100, you're looking at manual focus lenses for the large part - you'll find literally hundreds of M-series 50s (F2 or F1.7) on eBay.

The Pentax FA zooms are as cheap as chips. Look in the database here to see whether any pique your interest.

For around $150, you can find a Tamron 70-300mm AF which manages magnification of 1:2. That might suit you.

If you want AF, cheap, adn really good get the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8-4.5 OS HSM. You can find them around 150 at times and they are great. In fact I had one almost perma stuck on my camera until I went to the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8.

Also, for a sharp, cheap, and manual focus one get a Vivitar 75-205 f/3.8 close focus. You can pixel peep pictures with that lens as long as you're within 40 feet of the subject in my experience. After that it looses sharpness and picks up purple fringing.

Thank you VoiceofReason!

What does "pixel peep" mean? Looks like I can find that lens for very cheap.

You're welcome.

Pixel peep means to zoom way in on the picture, where you can actually see the pixels themselves.

For <100 to experiment with the Kit 18-55mm may be a good option. No where near the capabilities of the Tamron 17-50 but it is a fairly decent AF lens.

I have a K-x and really enjoy it. Check out my profile for lens collection. They all work fine with the K-x.

Did it come with an 18-55 DA-L kit lens? If not you can get one new around $100, used around $60.
Put out a wanted post here in the marketplace.
It is a good performer and AF too.

If you already have one and want to experiment with manual, try a Pentax M or A 50mm 1.7.

I forgot to mention! It did come with the kit lens, the 18-55. I've heard good things about this. So yes, this was quite the steal, body and kit lens for 130 dollars.

Which is why I'm thinking of getting something that is macro. Any suggestions there?
