PK_Tether

Hello,

I'm new to this forum....in fact new to any forum, so if I make any mistakes please let me know.

I have a Pentax K5 with Pentax 17-70 f4, Tamron 28-75 f2.8, Tamron 70-200 f2.8 and Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6

I was intrigued by PK_Tether and have downloaded the software. I have one or two questions which I am hopeful someone can help me with:

The software doesn't seem to want to install on my PC. I need to click on the zip file every time I want to use it, is this how it's supposed to work, or am I doing something wrong?

The software does run and I can change camera settings etc and I can take pictures using PKT but there is no image in the PKT window before I operate the shutter...... I had assumed that I would be able to see the image and check focus etc before operating the shutter....again is this how it's supposed to be or am I doing something wrong.

Hopeful for some guidance.

Thanks

Instruction:

1. step, drag the ZIP-file to the drawer where You would like to have it installed.
2. right click on the Zip-file, extract in current drawer.
3. right-click on the program icon to make a link
4. copy this link to your desktop or into the start-menu
5. start the program by clicking on the link.

The OP hasn't told which version of Windows he is using.

With well secured XP versions, not all PK_Tether functions are available without administrator privileges (or at least they shouldn't be). With XP Professional, a one-line script can cure the problem.

runas /user:your_user_name /savecred "Path_to_PK_Tether\PK_Tether.exe"

The link must then point to the script (saved somewhere as "name.CMD"), instead to the EXE.
With a well secured XP (home version), a minor Windows hack will be needed to get the script doing what it should.

With my 3 computers (all running on XP professional, other OS in virtual machines), without administrator privileges PK_Tether does not detect which Pentax body I am using.

With Vista, and again with W7, MS has changed its policy substantially, so there it might behave different.

As many statistics show that the majority of users are using XP as administrators - against all advices - this problem may stay widely unnoticed.

EDIT
I forgot to tell: "User_name" in the script must be the name of a user with administrator privileges. If you never used the "savecred" before, you will be asked once (when starting the script for the very first time) for the entry code of that user.
When everything works, change the properties of the link to "start minimized", to get rid of the console window you will otherwise see for a second every time you start PK_Tether.

Yes,

Yes,

and a SD-Card must be inserted. Otherwise your Cam might not show up in PK-tether.

Thanks for your help.

It's a great little programme which I expect to use quite a bit but I am a bit disappointed that there is no pre-shutter release image view.
