Metering with a Takumar (or an M)

Hi Guys

I know that I cannot meter in manual or AV mode when using a Takumar lens or my SMC M 28/2.8. Those are the only two modes I use on my Pentax K-x. Than is there any way I can use metering using those lenses? Otherwise how else can I provide for EV compensation correctly using those lenses? Thanks.

You actually can't use Av mode with your M lens, just M mode. This is because even if you use the aperture ring, the lens stays wide-open thanks to its automatic diaphragm, unlike a Takumar. See this guide:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-lens-articles/110657-how-use-meter...k-x-k-7-a.html

If you want to simulate EV compensation, simply set a slower shutter speed or aperture after pressing the green button in M mode. Each turn of the e-dial will correspond to 1/2 or 1/3 of a stop, as configured in your settings, and each turn of the aperture ring will correspond to either 1 or 1/2 of a stop, depending on whether or not there's an intermediate stop near the current aperture setting.

Yes, you can use Av mode when you use Takumar lenses, just set the aperture manually and watch the shutter speed change automatically. With K lenses and M lenses Adam has already explained that you should use stop down metering. There is atleast one K lens that behaves like a Takumar and allows Av mode, that is the K85/2.2 soft.
