It will not compare well-at all. The only advantages it has are weather sealing and autofocus screw drive.

The K200D uses an older generation CCD, does not have live view or video recording, and is limited to ISO 1600.

If you want an older Pentax, look at the Pentax equivalent of the D5000 the K-x.

I don't altogether agree. The main advantages of the D5000 are superior AF and better high ISO performance. The D5000 also has more bells & whistles features, like LV and the tilt/swivel screen. The D5000 would have a very definite advantage in low-light shooting and in sports/action photography. It has a huge advantage if LV and tilt/swivel screen are important to your style of shooting. In outdoor photography or photography with flash, the K200D, in terms of practical output, can produce just as good images as the Nikon camera. I would also note that the K200D generally sells for less money, has better ergonomics, and features a top LCD. Which camera constitutes the better value depends on your shooting style, the glass you own (Pentax or Nikon?), and your budget.

K200D also has SR, which in my view trumps all other differences, plus it supports AA batteries, has a significantly larger viewfinder, supports Pentax's superior control system such as the Green button, hyper modes, etc, and of course works with Pentax lenses, which is also in my view an advantage no Nikon can come close to matching. Add the weather sealing and in my opinion it's no contest in favor of the K200D. Note while ISO 1600 is as high as you can go in camera with the K200D, PP software is just as capable as artificially pushing the image farther as any camera's firmware is, so that's not really a significant difference, although the IQ of the D5000 will be a fraction of a stop better by the time you reach the equivalent of ISO 6400.

Of course, for not much more, you can get more modern Pentax DSLR's that include LiveView and video, if that stuff is important to you, and will make up that fraction of a stop difference in extreme high ISO performance.
