k200 works with only one memory card

I have always used the same memory card 4GB ScanDisk. I started taking more pictures and needed additional space.
1) I bought brand new cards, formated them in my camera, took pictures, reviewed them and then - poof - suddeny it says - no image. Or sometimes - camera cannot display the image.
2) It happened to me awhile ago for the first time - I didn't think anything of it, because the photographer who loaned it to me said that the card was old.
3) I bought 8GB cards, did everything right ( I think) and pictures disappeared - I returned the card thinking they malfunctioned. It seems that pictures disappeared once my batteries got low???
4) Yesterday- brand new cards, formated, pictures taken, I could review them and later in the evening - gone. I find it strange that the same day a friend loaned me her card - usual story: pictures disappeared, I came home and managed to retrieve pictures with a card reader, however the most important card is not even registering on my computer. I just downloaded CCleaner to retrieve files. What is going on? I am sorry for the saga. I would really appreciate your help! Thank you.

The ones that didn't work, what brands are they?

Did you update the camera firmware to the latest one?

I have 3 K200D bodies (not all at the same time) and they all accepted all the memory cards (4 to 16GB) that I threw at them. I've used Sandisk, lexar, Duracell (yes, an SD card), Panasonic, Sony...

AllSanDisk. Except the one my friend loaned me was something else. I don't have it now. But he one that works is also a SAnDisk. I am trying to find Recuva, but that doesn's eem to work on a Mac, is that right?

I had problems like that before I updated the firmware. No problems since.

Yes - update the firmware! BUT, be sure that you have good, fully charged batteries before beginning the update. If your camera batteries die during the update the camera will fail. You will then have to send it to Pentax service for a repair.

probably goes without saying...but use your "good" memory card for the update.

I don't know if it's related, but I found my K200d would not use one of my cards when I use an old manual lens, but is fine with auto ones, other cards work with this lens.
