Values?

Hi Folks,

I have some lenses that I'm not using and would like to sell (to raise money to buy another lens, of couse). However, I have no idea of how much they are worth. Is there a place on the forum where it would be permitted to describe them and inquire as to how much I should expect?

Thanks, Tom

You can ask in the lens section but you might do better just looking in the lens review database. Prices seem to lag a bit on some items that are in demand but mostly they give a good idea. Pentax Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

Also, check on ebay for completed listing, that will tell you what things have actually sold for recently.

There is a section on lens reviews that gives average prices paid for lenses. However, there is a cravate: someone who bought a lens 4 or 5 years ago will likely have paid paid less than someone who bought one six monthes ago, so the prices should only be used as an indication. Another route would be to search the sold section of the market prices for the same lenses you have. Lastly there is always ebay, but again, ebay has issues with some folks wanting to sell items a or near retail cost.

A very good way to value lenses is to go to evilbay. Don't look at just the items being bid on, but a more accurate value is the completed sales. This provides an evaluation on what folks are actually willing to pay. Bui it now (BIN) prices can be very artificially high and bear no relationship to reality.

You can find the completed sales by searching for the item, then in the upper right hand corner, there is the link for advanced. Click on that then check the completed sales and you have the same items sold over the last few months.

Also were you are in the world matters... Pentax in Canada is cheaper than most of the world I have noticed. Some places pay way more for items like downunder. Do you remember what you bought them for? That is a fair place to start as if you paid that amount someone else likely will too... accounting for changes in market, condition of lens, etc...
