there are a few things to consider with moving subjects, first of all, you need to consider the possibility of turning shake reduction off, because as yo move the camera it may try to compensate for the panning action and actually introduce blur. Also, as others have mentioned, consider increasing shutter speed,

lastly, consider zooming out slightly, if the image is filling the viewfinder, so that you can focus on the subject and the crop to suit. trying to achieve a full frame on a moving subject and have the focus where you want it reqires some cropping, to get a higher success rate.

also, do not simply machine gun the shots, but selectively shoot, because when machinegunning, the AF has a harder time, i.e. it can't track focus when the mirror is up

I've noticed 1 thing. If im machinegunning one seagull and first one looks ok all them will look good. If first one is bad theyre all bad. It's all the time like that.
I'm not machinegunning all the time i let it to focus for afc and continue, doing little pauses.

Hmm never tried turning off SR. Maybe that would fix some pictures... Will try it next session but nw when i think not sure how it can work. Have to test it. Are People usually turning off SR for pics like this????

Btw all of my images are cropped. I don't have many full shots on seagulls at all cause i'm shooting wild seagulls not the ones in harbours that are used to people so it' kind a hard to catch im close enough for full frame.
