Perhaps moisture seeped in between two tightly placed elements, causing you to have a sort of kaleidoscope effect? Fungus wouldn't be rainbow colored, sadly.(Unless you ate the wrong type)

It sounds a lot like element separation, where two elements are glued together and the cement fails. If you can find an optical diagram of the lens, you could see if there are elements glued together in about the right spot. When I've seen it, it's never been on a lens that would be worth repairing. It's not really something you'd do yourself anyway.

There are three areas where it has laminated elements... All deep enough that it is only obvious if a bright point source of light were in the shot.

The high curved elements are always a pain to re-glue.
