alternative to K5 standard viewfinder cap

I find the Pentax K5 viewfinder cap a pretty unhelpful piece of kit since so far as I can see you have to remove the viewfinder eye-cup and support frame to use it. Has anyone come up with a (homemade?) viewfinder cover solution which can be very quickly and simply dropped over the eye-piece when required for long exposures? I see electricians tape has been suggested previously but I am hoping somebody might have come up with a cleaner (more 'elegant') solution.

Try gaffer's tape rather than electrician's tape. It is available in wider widths and doesn't leave as much residue.

Other than that none of the caps I've seen work anyway except by sliding onto the view finder which requires removal of the rubber eye cup.

Hey, Mr. Ricoh/Pentax - where is my viewfinder blind??????? That's really the only good solution - but it means someone else's product.

I experimented with a piece of cardboard that tucks under the rubber on 3 sides. Plastic would be better but the cardboard seems to work OK. I tested it out with sun shining directly on the viewfinder and an IR filter in the lens. It works as well as the supplied piece. I'll use it until I find some matte black plastic.

I just leave gaffers tape stuck to my camera for this and many other purposes.

It may not be "elegant" but it's just a camera...

It doesn't solve the problem of requiring the removal of the eye-cup, but for over 30 years I have kept my viewfinder cap stitched like a button to the inside of my camera's neck strap. The cap has never been lost, and is always handy.

I carry a cap with me all the time on my left hand. Works well up to about three feet from the camera - my thumb.

I usually just put the lens cap on the eye-cup to block the light.
It seems to stay in place and block the light well enough in most cases, but I might start binging a rubber band to secure the cap better.

Thanks to all.

I have been fiddling about further with all sots of bits and pieces since I posted my query and have found that the rear lens cap from a Tamron lens fits over the rubber eye cup perfectly. It fits snugly onto and gently grips the rubber creating a secure cover.

I sometimes just hang my hat over the viewfinder. For exposures faster than 1/60, my thumb works just fine.
