I agree with abacus. It's all technique and what you want to show. Very wide is nice for sweeping vistas, but that is not the only type of landscapes there are. I don't consider myself a landscape expert by any means, but my more satisfying landscapes are usually longer focal lengths. Several people have mentioned manual focus lenses for landscapes, which is a good idea on a tripod, especially if you have focus peaking.
