Manual Focus with Pentax cameras

How do I use the manual focus on a Pentax camera?

I'm interested in buying the super cheap Pentax K-01 so I went to a store to get my hands on it. I turned the mode dial to M like I do with every camera to fiddle with manual mode. When I tried to turn the "focus ring" on the lens it was stiff and when I clicked the shutter button the camera changed the focus as if the camera was in auto. I looked around the menu to change the auto-focus to manual-focus but all I could find was different auto-focus types.

Did I miss something in the menu? Does manual focus only work with certain lenses? I also tried the K-5. So I bet there is a simple answer.

M on the mode dial set the exposure mode to manual, i.e. you'll have to set shutter speed and aperture (and ISO) yourself. M exposure mode does not affect the focus mode.

To get the camera into manual focus mode you push up the swich on the left side of the lens mount.
