It won't operate unless the flash is charged. Is it?

It is possible to change this in the Custom menu.

I would say check the battery's charge. Also remove the battery and re-insert them and see if it works. That's all the ideas I have left =(

Check battery / replace battery.

If is still doing that than I guess something went wrong with how the built-in flash is charging.
In that case, I strongly recommend to take it to a professional (unless you know what you are doing) or return it to Pentax if still under warranty and let them figure it out what went wrong.

im having the same pop-up flash issue w/ mine. my shutter actuations is around 3k. when I use a (yongnuo) bounce flash it fires the bounce flash just fine, works as intended. I remove the camera battery ouf of the k-5 when not in use so i dont think its the battery.

Will the flash fire at all? If not, probably broken. My K-5 did the same thing -- camera worked fine with flash closed, but open no flash, no nothing. Had to send to for warranty repair, now works fine.

- im not sure if the above is for me. the camera works just fine if not using the pop-up flash. if the pop-up flash is open, it wont fire the flash but it will fire the flash using a bounce flash. im not sure if i should send it for repair since using a bounce flash is way better than the pop-up anyways. dilemma! dilemma!

I am afraid that vonBaloney is right. The same thing happened to me with my old *ist DL: The discharge tube in the built-in flash went "poof" one day and from thereonafter the battery icon would show "no charge" with the flash raised as soon as I pressed the shutter button, and the shutter wouldn't work until I lowered the flash again. I would definitely send my K-5 in for professional repair in a situation like this.
