K10D or K-01 or .......

Hi,
i have a Canon S95 but am not fond of its behaviour in low light.
So i might keep it as a on the road cam , because it is small.
So i noticed that a K10D can produce very nice pics , with good lenses , is WR , and can be found for around 200 euros with kitlens.
As i am a fisherman , WR could comein handy.
I have 4 kids too , so i presume the AF is quick enough to capture some action shots , with a fast lens.
On the other side , i kind of like the K-01 too , and prices have dropped considerably., i could have one with kitlens for 300euro,or with 40mm for 460euros.
High ISO performance is far better than with the k10d , right?
So this is my dilemma ;
does the K-01 blow away the k10d ?
My plan would be a cheaper body , and add good lenses along the way .

In terms of image quality, it basically does. It's also faster overall in terms of general processing speed. However, the K-01 isn't weather sealed and the AF is pretty slow with long lenses, so it's not better in every way!

like adam said it the k-01 kills the k10d in IQ but does not have WR but the k10d is a great camera and you can get pretty good iso up to about 800 iso after that it gets a little to noisy well for me but i have had great images come out of my kids with it and have had it for 2 years and it came with about 10,000 clicks and i put another 10,000 on it and its still running strong.

I recently sold my k20d to fund my purchase of a k-01, since like you I shoot a fair bit of pictures in low light. As long as you know its limitations, e.g. slow focusing with long lenses. lack of weather proofing, the lack of a "true c-AF", the K-01 is a pretty excellent camera, at least IMO. Though you can't fire away on a K-01, like a DSLR, with action shots.

You can buy the K-30 for not a lot more and get the weather sealing, better video, and focus peaking.

re

k10d slow with longer lenses ; is this true for the 100mm f2.8 macro ?
This lens produces fantastic shots

The K30 indeed seems like an awesome camera , combining excellent IQ and WR
The k30 + 18-55 is 600 euro here in Belgium.

But , as i read somewhere , bodies come and go , good lenses stay

The K-30, as suggested above might be a good compromise between the two. The K-01 is portable, small and excels in low light compared to the K10D. The K-01 also has a maximum ISO of 25,600. The K10D has a maximum of 1600, and IQ suffers at ISO 800.

The K-01 and K-30 might be better to snap photos of kids compared to the K10D, but the K10D has more dials than the K-01 and more information visible (top LCD) than the K-30.

That being said, the K10D is still the champion for IQ at ISO 100. The K20D, K-7, K-5, K-5II/s, K-30 and K-01 can't beat the K10D's noise-free ISO 100.

When it comes to sensor performance - yes, it's a night and day difference.

I have a K-01 and and K10D. Bought the K-01 a few months ago and hadn't even touched my K10D until today, but... Today, I was on a field trip where we were shooting primarily macros and I enjoyed using my K10D far more than my K-01. For me (and your mileage may differ), the K-01 excels at spur of the moment stuff where I'm shooting with an auto-focus wide angle and using a tripod doesn't even enter into the equation. But for those times where I'm being deliberate...where I have time to use a tripod, shoot at the lowest ISO possible, and really fine-tune my composition, I still prefer my K10D...mostly because of the intimacy of looking through an eyepiece as opposed to holding my camera a foot or so away from my face. However, for any ISO above 400 or so, it's no contest...the K-01 is barely flexing it's muscles, while my K10D is huffing and puffing to try and keep up.

it is going to be a tough choice
i like macros too.
What lens are u using for this ?
Manual focus with legacy glass is quite easy on the K01 , using focus peaking.
How is MF with old lenses done with th K10d

I was using a manual focus Vivitar Series 1 90-180mm flat-field zoom. I've seen where other folks love using manual focus lenses with the K-01 because of the focus peaking, but I haven't really liked it all that well. However...I haven't really done a serious test where I shoot a scene with my K10, then re-shoot it with my K-01.

It's more challenging. I've been using a magnifier loupe (O-ME53) on the viewfinder:

Yesterday , a guy put up his K-R for sale ,with 18-55mm and comes with lithium accu + 4 eneloops , and a focussing screen with prisma.
The seller wants 300euro for this
He claims that the K-R rivals Nikon d3100-3200 and canon 600d
I have read some reviews and indeed , the K-R seems to be very good in high Iso ans has fast AF

the search has become more complicated , or maybe not
maybe i should forget about the k10d ?

I think it depends on what you want to take pictures of. If you tell us your shooting style we might be able to offer our opinions to help narrow down the choices. For example, the K10D doesn't do video, nor does it focus as quickly as newer bodies. If you want video, eliminate the K10D. K-01 doesn't have multiple dials and is closer to a point and shoot. If you want a front and rear dial, skip the K-r and K-01. If you want high ISO capability with nice IQ, consider a newer body like the K-01 or K-r. If you want unmatched 100 ISO and do a lot of landscape photos, the K10D is what you should consider.
