Do yourself a favor, and try one of the limited primes. Buy it here on the forum used, and if you don't like it, sell it along. Nearly no cost in that. You say you're not a prime shooter, but Pentax primes, especially the limiteds, are really really nice. The 40 is usually available used for ~$300, so really not too much cash. The first shot I saw from my 40 had me hooked. You may prefer the results of the 43, but it's a little bit more expensive. The 55 is weather sealed, so may be your best bet. The portraits from it are stunning.

After all of your deliberations, you will come back and tell us what you decided on finally.

Right now I think I have made a decision but this could change by the end of the day!

Body: K5
Lens: 18-135 and Tamron 28-75
Future Prime Lens: 77 or 43
Future zoom lens: DA*300 or Tamron 70-200 2.8 HSM II

I've been reading a ton about sports with the Pentax and most are shooting with either zooms that I would like to get in the future (not far off future). I want to play with the 2 I have to get comfortable with the brand before I go all buying crazy!! I know the 2 I have are not good for sports but I have other photo interests that do not include sports!

What are your thoughts? Again, my focus for photography is sports, portraiture (nude and implied nude), and events. I might throw some landscape and fun stuff in there but not gonna be on the top of my list.

So the decision is not made, it will only truly made once you've pulled the trigger on the purchase.

I'm the wrong guy to ask about zooms, I don't own one, not that there's anything wrong with them. But for my work I don't need them, so I use my fast primes to get the job done.

The DA*300 isn't a zoom.
The DA55-300 is a pretty versatile long zoom, though.

I know it's not a zoom but for my reference due to the length, I called it a zoom. Sorry for error!!

I've read that the 55-300 isn't very quick so for sports it might not be my best option. I don't want to waste money on something that isn't going to work. I'd rather just save for what I know will get the shots.

The 55-300 is fine for outdoor daytime sports.

I'd choose between 28-75 and 18-135. That's serious overlap as your only 2 lenses.

True! But I'm hoping at some point I'll stop second guessing myself and pull the trigger on a body! I have the 18-135 and the Tamron is being purchased. I just need a body! The future stuff will come in time and I think I've settled on a wish list. I need to just stop reading and researching!!

You'll do well to start and then decide what you can't do with your current lenses. I think you're trying to get a perfect kit to start with, and no one can do that without buying a lot of items they're not really going to use consistently. There are threads full of people shooting sports, have a look at those if you really want. I think the 55-300 is the best affordable longer zoom, and with the good higher ISO performance you can stop down and keep your shutter speed up. If focus is the issue, it's not (usually) the lens, after all.

I'll agree with Terry on this. Gradually work your way into lenses. I've been shooting for 50 years or so with Pentax SLR cameras, and here is my focal length acquisition sequence, skipping screw to K replacements in 1978.
55
135
28
70-210
400
100 macro
28-80
24-90
-- digital required
12-24
16-50
50-135
55-300

I'm still learning the 55-300. It's a lot better than I expected if I treat it right.

Take it slow and easy. You'll be happier (and not as broke).

I would not get the K30 if you're shooting sports. The in-camera buffer fills up way too fast if you are firing off shots in RAW, and you are likely to miss shots.

Alright, decisions made and I'm not changing them.

Purchased: K5, AF280 flash, 18-135 and 100-300
Next purchases: 35 and 77 primes
Wish list: DA*300

I might still check out the Tamron 28-75 if the 18-135 doesn't produce good bokeh shots in that range. I've read and researched enough for weeks and I've driven myself a little crazy. So, I had to make a decision and pull the trigger. Thanks everyone for help as I make the transition and leave Canon. I'm sure there will be plenty of questions once all this gear arrives!! First shoot with this stuff is next Sunday!

AF280? Any reason for that flash, I don't think it's even compatable with the k5.

My only grumble is that it should be free, for Pete's sake (also lens hoods.) I agree on the recommendation of the K-5, btw.

I've been reading that even though it's a pretty old lens everyone who has one LOVES it. I guess I need to double check if it's compatable but I've read that it was.
