You will not pay import duties if the purchase is less than A$1,000. This amount is the sum of all items in one purchase. For example, if you purchase 2 lenses of a total value excl. shipping of $940, you will not pay import tax.

I have purchase a number of lenses from Adorama (new and used), B&H (new), Keh (used). I can recommend all of them. In most cases, the lens was not available in Australia, or was nearly twice the price available in North-America. On the other hand I bought some lenses in Australia when the prices were competitive and the main benefit is the Australian warranty off course.

Hope that the comment may help.

That's correct.

i do the following - anything I think is important to have a warranty on I get within Australia. Unless i can get it about 30% cheaper OS. All my consumables I get from overseas - mostly from B&H.

I have always had good service and prices from digital direct in Australia. It has been worth while as CR Kennedy has replaced one camera and one lens under warranty and done a couple of free repairs even out of warranty for small odd things.

i should have also said that for cameras and lenses looking for good Aus prices is not that far behind the US and sometimes it is even lower eg when I got my 60-250 the cheapest way to get it from a reputable dealer was Digital Direct. I find the accessories the biggest difference.

This information is incorrect. Shipping IS included in the cost. It is a Goods AND services tax so if you pay $940 for the goods and it costs $65 to ship that comes in over $1000 and you will be charged accordingly.

Also, if you import a few items separately, but at the same time, they will add them all together if they notice that and you will be charged.
For example: 3 items costing $400 each, and from different suppliers, will be charged GST if they come in at the same time and customs sees this. They will see you as more than a casual importer.

I understood the value includes shipping. So if the shipping on that example is $70, the total is over $1000 so duty will be payable.

The CRK Australian Online Store has the 15mm listed at AU$649.

There are some very good lens prices in there for local stock, not all but a few are very good, eg the FA & DA limiteds and a couple of the longer DA* lenses. Looks like they finally re-cut those prices to reflect current exchange rates. These new prices would prob stop me ordering from B&H for those ones anyway, but the 16-50 and 50-135 are still way over priced.

The DA*60-250 is $100 less to buy than the DA*50-135. Hopefully they'll adjust the DA*50-135 down to something like $1095 or $1195. I sold mine through a local store and basically got 1/2 what I bought it for a year earlier after they took their commission. They made more selling my lens used than they did new.

You may check, but I had a couple of purchase just below $1000 excl. shipping and I had no pb. In one case, I had to provide the invoice showing that the good value was less than $1000, excl shipping costs.
Hope it may help

I may have been confused with GST.

If the value of the goods is over $1000, GST is payable on the sum of the value of the goods + duty + freight. See When buying over the internet
