X-5 will not start says check that lens cap has been removed

Hi

I bought my daughter a Pentax X-5 for Christmas. She has used it fairly extensively for three months or so. However now it won't start properly in capture mode. An error message appears asking if the lens cap has been removed (it has) and then the process cuts out and the camera switches off. It starts in playback mode with no problems. Has anyone else had a similar problem and managed to resolve it?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure really, I'd contact the seller, and request a warranty repair.

Yes, try a fully charged battery first. Hopefully that is the problem.

Has the camera been dropped, accidentally turned on inside a bag or case, or has it been used in a heavily dusty environment? The lenses on compacts/super-zooms can get jammed and will lock up the camera at start-up. Sometimes it can be fixed, other times it turns the camera into a paper weight.

If it is a stuck lens, you might be able to fix it yourself, but if you still have a bit of warranty left, I'd ship it back to be fixed professionally. Here's a link to an article about fixing a stuck lens: Lens Repair: How to Fix a Jammed Camera Lens

I have a similar Nikon P&S and it knows at start up that the lens cap is no because this blocks the lens zoom functions. A P&S will retract always to shortest length of the lens at power down so the cap can be installed, but this is not the default FL at start up.

If your lens cap is off, and you get this message, then something is blocking the lens zoom functions or focusing to make lens movement impossible, hence the message.

The likely causes are either being dropped or hit during use
