K-x Firmware

I keep seeing mentions of firmware updtes etc. I am something of a technophobe/dinosaur, what are the benefits or advantages of the updates on the K-x and how would I go about doing the job?

Thanks

Steve

The latest K-x firmware update adds support for SDXC (>32gb) cards as well as more cross-processing options.

Firmware upgrade instructions
  1. Download the 1.03 firmware ZIP file
  2. Extract the file to a folder of your choosing
  3. Locate the extracted .BIN file and copy it to the root (top level) of a formatted SD card
  4. Insert the card into your camera and ensure it is fully charged
  5. Turn the camera power on while pressing the MENU button
  6. Select "Yes"at the firmware prompt
  7. Once the screen displays "Complete", turn off your camera
  8. Power your camera back on and resume normal use
  9. In order to verify that the firmware update was successful, hold the menu button while powering your camera on. The screen should indicate version 1.03. You should then power off your camera and resume normal use.

Here is a link to the actual download page: Latest K-x Firmware Update : Software Downloads | PENTAX RICOH IMAGING

Firmware is the program that runs the camera. Over time manufacturers improve things, add features and correct errors. If you are satisfied with your camera there is no need to update the firmware, but in most cases you will see some (minor) improvements. If I remember correctly they improved battery life and reporting on the k-x and added support for sdxc memory cards. And usually a firmware update will 'fix' things you never knew were wrong and they never told you about either.

The instructions for the update are on the link. Make sure you have freshly charged batteries. Download the file, extract it and put it on the root of a memory card. Root meaning the top level directory not in a folder. Then follow the instructions.

It is a little daunting the first time, but not all that complicated.
