K-x Shuts off after Shutter release and other times

I am having problems with my Pentax k-x. I am the second owner and have used it for about a year and a half.

Starting in the last 6 months or so I have been noticing this problem to be happening on a more frequent basis. I will be using the camera and all of a sudden, when I press the shutter button, the shutter audibly sounds like it fires but seems to remain open a slightly longer period than the setting. After the shutter returns, the camera becomes unresponsive.
(Very similar to what is described here: K-X shuts off after shutter closes. Loose part? - This happens with both the 18-55mm, Sigma 18-250mm, and no lens. From a recent picture, I have software 1.02.

I have tried repeatedly turning on and off the power switch. Sometimes that works.
I have tried leaving it for a period of time. Sometimes that works.
I have tried gently bumping it and that didn't work.
I have tried changing out the batteries for new ones (I've always used Ultimate Lithiums). No luck.

I tried holding down buttons while turning it on (advice from another thread) and holding the review button worked only once. That was the last time that it worked and when it came on, I noticed that there was a flicker both in the red "access" light as well as in the screen/backlight. I did not try to fire the shutter but went into reviewing my pictures. The pictures came up and I looked at a few photos before going back to the home screen (photo settings). Still not firing the shutter, I watched the screen as a distorted bar (2-5 px high) appeared horizontal across the whole screen (near the bottom of Tv). I was slightly shocked seeing that and did nothing. It lasted ~1.5sec before the whole screen blacking out. The camera has become unresponsive. None of my previous methods worked at reviving it.

With my limited knowledge of electronics, the flickering lead me to believe that my voltage regulator (I assume it has one) might be shot. I recognize that's not a small fix but that may not even be the problem.

Any other suggestions on what the problem could be?? Any other troubleshooting steps I should/could take?

It sounds suspiciously like a power problem of some sort. I have seen the same sort of symptoms with my K-x when a set of my NiMh batteries were getting a bit old (electrically soft - which means voltage drops more when higher currents are drawn).
I know you have tried alternative batteries so a next step might be to try is to clean the battery contacts (just in case there is a grease film on them). I have done this with a gentle wipe of pencil eraser (then wipe away any rubber with a clean cloth).
Can't think of any other ideas just at the moment - unless it is to try another brand of battery.
