Pentax SF-10/SF-7 won't read film

I just got a SF-7 and it seems to work, except that I haven't been able to make it read the T-max 100 film I've tried putting into it. Any idea? I've put in a new battery but it just says zero frames all the time.

Also, should the shutter/mirror work without the film?

I'm pretty sure it does. I tested mine recently. I just went and tried but the battery is flat.

In that case it's more busted than I thought...
