Pentax autofocus question on new lens

I just picked up a SMC Pentax-A 1:2 50mm lens on ebay for 15 bucks shipped and I threw it on my K-x hoping it would keep it's autofocus function from the ZX-m camera it was attached to.

it does not move and only seems to work in manual function with me moving the focus ring

I bought a sigma lens a few months ago and released the ring or changed a setting in order for that lens to work and I'm thinking maybe that has something to do with this lens

or maybe this lens will never have an auto focus option

please help...

Erm, I don't think the Pentax A series has autofocus. Not sure how it had AF with the MZ-X.

True that the ZX-m has AF capabilities, but if it was a Pentax A lens, then it only works in manual focus. You can still use it on both the ZX-m and your K-x, but in manual. (if AF is what you want, look at a Pentax F, FA, DA lens)

.
That lens has never been an autofocus lens, the "A" is for auto aperture which means set it to A on the aperture ring and you can control the aperture with your camera.

The ZX-M was a manual focus camera.

Pentax MZ-M/ZX-M - Pentax Manual Focus Film SLRs - Pentax Camera Reviews and Specifications

The only "Auto" with this setup was the automatic aperture control, which will also work on your K-x.

As a side note, $15 is a very fair price for that lens. It's not as good as some of the faster 50's, but it's really quite nice.

thanks for the help guys !

I shoot a lot in manual focus anyways so I'll be okay with the lens

I'm just looking to find a quick 50mm lens that's autofocus, problem is my budget can only afford about $50 right now and that is not enough

The only commonly mentioned issue with using a SMC Pentax A- 50mm/1.2 lens on a K-x is some difficulty in seeing when the lens is at critical focus when it is wide open. It is a reason a number of people have swapped their K-x's focusing screen for another type. I guess it is all in the eye of the beholder (I know, I know .... really bad pun).

@JimJohnson
True, but the OP was speaking about the 1:2, not the 1.2

There is no autofocus 50mm for $50. You will need to spend closer to $200 for the cheapest autofocus primes. The cheapest candidates are the F50 f1.7, FA50 f1.7 or FA28 f2.8, all typically available near $200, or $250 for the FA50 f1.4.

For $50, you get manual focus.

Or a Pentax-F 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5 zoom, which does have auto focus, has very nice IQ, is small like a prime, but does not have a very wide maximum aperture.
