fitting a lens to my K-x

I recently bought a 0.43x wide angle lens (58mm) online. It stated that it fits pentax k-x with lenses that are 18-50mm (which I THOUGH said 18-55 which mine is) It is way larger diameter than my lens it is supposed to just fit onto. Is there any manner of adapter that I could buy so that I can still use this lens or should I return it? I'm a total beginner, btw, just thought I'd found a good deal.

Such lenses are not usually a good deal as they degrade the image quality a lot. You can buy a step-down ring that is 52-58mm that will connect the two, but I wouldn't.

There are step up and step down rings that basically change the filter thread size. You can find them pretty cheap online.
Basically, you need to look at the diameter in mm.
Oh, and there are different Pentax 18-55mm (DA WR, DA L). Some might have different filter threads.

thanks, all good to know. May just send it back and find one that just fits to the camera body instead of on the lens.

Nope, the `18-55 differs in Weather Resistance (WR) and optics (AL vs. AL II & WR) but the thread size on all 3 versions is 52mm.

if you want wider than 18mm and don't want to pay too much, consider buying a used DA 16-45mm (usually $220-300 depending on condition). makes for an excellent replacement for your kit 18-55 lens and will give you a noticeably wider field of view as well.

You may want to try buying a lens that fits a Pentax K mount specifically. Wide angle, telephoto, and fish eye lens addons that fit at the end of your lens are cheap because they are poor quality. Generally speaking, you won't get quality results with one of those universal lens addons.

If you are looking for some more wide angle coverage, I'd get the smc Pentax-DA Fish Eye Zoom 10-17mm. Much better optics and much more fun.

Regards

Chris

Well, yes, but the 10-17 is a fish-eye, so better be sure that it's the effect sought.

At 10mm, it's very much "fisheye", at 17mm it's /almost/, but not quite rectilinear.

I've had one of these wide-angle auxiliary lens 'gems' for several years. I first used it on an early P&S. Better than nothing, but barely. For grins and giggles I tried mounting it on one of my Pentax lenses. Worked great if I was into abstract art or photographing for the fun house in the travelling carnival.
