No lens identifier in EXIF data

Hi all,

Apologies if this has already been asked. I haven't been able to find a definitive answer. I shoot with k-5 and use Lightroom 4 to process & archive my shots. My query relates to missing lens names in exif data.

When I use a pentax lens (16-50, 35, 50), the lens name shows in the exif data within LR. When I use the sigma 17-70 or 70-200, the lens is not identified, meaning I'm not entirely sure which lens to select when using lens corrections.

When using LR lens corrections, the Pentax lenses are selected automatically as the lens name is captured within the exif data. I need to manually select either of the sigma lenses using the drop down boxes in lens corrections. This is more than a bit of a pain rather than a real problem.

Is this a common issue? Is there a workaround so that the lens name is included in the shot specs when loaded into LR?

Thanks in advance.
Darren.

It's mainly an issue of Sigma not being consistent in their use of lens codes. If the lens is a first party lens it is likely to be identified correctly (eventually), third party lenses are hit or miss.

What he said.

The newer lenses provide a code through the data pin on the mount that is included as part of the exif. If the code is missing or ambiguous or not in the LR database, the lens may be misidentified or not identified at all on import.

It can get a little more confusing with rebadged lenses, I had a Tamron 28-105, a Promaster version of the same, and they both showed up as Pentax FA28-105 on LR, which didn't matter on lens corrections because they were all the same lens.

Yes...

what I have done to get around this is create user presets for both of these lenses so I can batch correct my images.
when you create each preset make sure that only lens correction setting are ticked, else you add everytime the image correction from what ever image you created the preset to your new images.

what lenses are they exactly, I can export my presets if you want them (see lenses in my sig)

Thanks all.
Looks like manual selection of lens in Lens Corrections might be the way to go. Or get myself a 50-135 or 60-250!!!
Cheers,
Darren.

The easiest method to fix things is ExiftoolGUI and a text file with the appropriate lens descriptions. It's quick and easy to fix things.

In the screen capture below I am fixing my Copyright in the exif

These are my two Sigma command fixers

exiftool -Lens="Sigma 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM" -m -overwrite_original_in_place -P
exiftool -Lens="Sigma 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM" -m -overwrite_original_in_place -P
