Hidden photos on memory card

I am using a Sandisk Extreme 16GB card with my K-01. After every "shoot" I download to my computer and then delete the snaps from the card.

We recently acquired a new flat screen TV with a card reader, and in trying it out, it showed not only the most recent photos but also a batch from three months ago. These old snaps do not show up on the computer read of the card, nor do they show on the camera review. The card has never been used in any other camera.

Any idea why this happened? Is this simply a matter of re-formatting the card or is there something I should be doing differently?

Thanks

Banskojoe

when you delete a file, its record is removed from the file system table of contents but the values of the disk sectors which were occupied by the file remain intact until these sectors are reused to write something else. Some reason your tv software is acting like a recovery tool, it is reading those sectors directly and building up the original files. In Camera formatting might zero all data or use computer to do that (zero format takes significantly longer time).

Software in the TV is not a pc, so how it reads the card might be completely different than what we expect. It might in fact not be reading the FAT table but just looking for jpeg file headers on the card itself. Which is what file recovery software does as well. Try formatting the card and see if that makes a difference.

If you really want to wipe something or just zero out "deleted" files then sdelete is a good tool for this. Page below also gives a good overview of how the Windows file system works for reference.

SDelete
