I have this tiny but ideal messenger bag right now that snugly fits exactly everything I need on a walkaround:

- DA 15 ltd: leaving that at home always gives me regrets.

- DA 35 ltd: same as above. ALWAYS in the bag.

- DA 18-135: does all the work when conditions are moist/wet/dusty/etc. Often exchanged for the DA 10-17. Or my 55mm ƒ1.2. Or any of my Russian lenses.

- External mic: I sometimes end up filming and can't listen to the sound of the built-in mic.

- Cigars: A very important photografic tool for me. They help me take my time to look at the scene and think of all the possibilities.

For my street work recently, I run really light just a 20 mm for about 80% of my shots, the rest on the 135 mm.

Depends on where I am walking around. And sometimes I dare my self to take just lens (not kit) - which is not tooooo hard as I don't have a big collection of lenses.

Most of the time I take at least my Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70 f2.6-2.8 (I find its pretty much as good as my 28mm primes @ 28). Typically also one or two of:
- A50 f1.4 (small little fantastic)
- Sigma 10-20 f3.5
- Bower 85 f1.4

If I'm just strolling, and can bring only 1 camera and lens, I always take my KX and my M28/3.5 with me. Compact, small, and cheap it can actually fit in a very small bag. If I can add another lens, I bring the tank-like, also cheap F70-210. I can walk anywhere without worrying too much, as opposed to carrying expensive glasses. I'd like to think that there are a lot of times when I'm a mere glass collector, than a photography enthusiast.

lol wow, some of you lug around quite a lot of gear. If I'm just walking, I take one prime, maybe two (with different characteristics, like one MF one AF, or one wide one long). And usually its on the K-01.
Though, I guess some of the Pentax lenses are so tiny you can easily carry even a couple of them

If I am going somewhere with the intentions of taking pictures of something in particular, then it isn't a "walking around" setup. In that case, I take the K7 (K5 is on the way), DA15, DA21, DA40, D FA 100. I also carry along spare batteries, SD cards, etc..

If I am just going out and want to bring a camera along for walking around, then I will choose a lens that fits where I am going. I mount that lens on the camera body, verify that the battery is charged, and that's it. Most of the time, it's either the DA15 or DA40.

I've settled into a "lens of the day" simple kit - with body to match. Typically a film body (MX, LX, SV) and 50 or 85 if in a Pentax mood, or Leica with 35 or 50.

As with some others it depends on where I am. If I'm just close by the house, one lens will do, and that's most often the Vivitar 200mm M42 since birds are my primary target. No bag, just a spare battery in a pocket. Usually at least once every 2 or 3 days I'll switch to a 50mm and do some flower and insect shots, butterflies and dragonflies, lizards and such, and normally at least once a week I'll put together a macro rig. That's a toss up...50mm and extension tubes, usually with flash, I have 45mm of extension tubes and thinking about removing the glass from another teleconvertor to have another about 25mm, or I can use a 135mm Lentar M42 lens and any of 4 sets of extension tubes that gives me almost any combination of 10mm to something like 200mm of tubes...usually around 40-75mm. Yesterday I used 75mm and got some nice dragonfly and lizard shots. Last time out I used about 45mm.

If I take off on a drive or a road trip, I put together a bag depending on where I go. Just around town it's usually the 200mm and a 50mm, if I go out of town I take a bigger bag with 200mm, 135mm, 50mm, 28mm, mini tripod, monopod or maybe tripod, extension tubes, flash, remote...never know what I'll need on a road trip so I take a full kit. IN that case a charger for lithium batteries and one for AA too, external hard drive, just about everything...for just a drive around town, the 200mm and a 50 usually, and some extension tubes, with flash. A tripod is always in the Jeep. (I have 3 so I can leave one in the vehicle at all times.

I'll add my bit of advice on this topic. Make sure your zooms do overlap.

I grabbed just my 18-55 and 55-300 for a wedding last year. I was a guest, not an official photographer and wanted some candid photos of family members we do not see very often. No bag, just my jacket pocket for the unused lens. It felt like the next shot really needed the lens that was in my pocket - because it was just the other side of that 55mm boundary. 'Zooming with my feet', wasn't practical. I finally gave up and used the 18-55 most of the time and cropped later.

A month after that I found my used F 35-70 to bridge the gap.

Today's WALKING (meaning lightweight) kit? DA 18-135 and DA L 55-300, extra SD card, extra battery, lens pen (rarely used in the field), monopod with quick release (doubles as a walking stick).

#3: Fun, lightweight kits:

• One of 2C lenses OR
• F 35-70

#4: 2 Body kits: #1 plus

• K-x and one of 2A or 2B or 2C

As you can see, the K-30 and the DA 18-135 are an excellent pair, and I build the rest of my kit around it.

Well, I do a lot of walking around, so have 3 different-sized bags, depending on how much 'stuff' I'll need. The 3rd bag holds 2 bodies, otherwise I take one body with grip, both batteries charged.
(1) Lowepro Adventura 170-. K10D, F 35-70mm Macro, Miranda 24mm f/2.8, PK-A 135 f/2.8. SD cards, CPL's.
(2) Pentax Slingbag- K-7 w/ DA 35mm f/2.4 AL, DA 16-45mm, FA 100mm f/3.5 Macro, M 50mm f/1.7, AF 360ftz, CPL's, SD cards, Luminx folding diffuser.
(3) Lowepro Pro Runner 200 AW- K-7/w DA 35mm f/2.4 AL, K10D with no lens attached. DA 16-45mm, Miranda 24mm f/2.8, FA 100m f/3.5 Macro, M85 f/2.0, A 135mm f/2.8, AF360ftz, accessories.
The Pro Runner is a fairly compact backpack, small compared to a real hiking pack but big compared to a 1-strap camera bag. It gets heavy quickly when you start packing all that glass and metal, plus some plastic. But, for two bodies ++, you can't beat it.

For me, walking around is K5 plus one manual prime. I generally use a different lens each outing, so none of them feel neglected. On any given day I would select one of the following:

Sigma 24mm 2.8
SMC Pentax 28mm 3.5
SMC Pentax 30 2.8
SMC Pentax 35 3.5
A plethora of 50's/55's too numerous to list.

55mm is the longest focal length I walk around with, otherwise I'm apt to run into camera shake problems.

My walking around kit requires no camera bag. It consists of my K-7 with battery grip, the DA 18-135 attached to the camera, and the DA 40 and DA 70 in their pouches attached to belt loops with carabiner clips. The belt loops are attached to pants with at least one pocket big enough to hold the 18-135 or else the 18-135 goes into a lens pouch attachable to a belt loop via carabiner clip.
