I will need to play with the metering mode. I don't recall what I was using, centre weighted perhaps. I was very new to my camera at the time so put it down as a learning experience.

I also adjust those two photos in LR, hadn't though to go B&W...seem to come up OK.

Following this thread, I can't argue with any of the advice given. I recognize that the original samples provided by Esky were not what the photographer had in mind. At the same time, I think this is a great example of a "mistake" turning out much better than the intended look. The 'properly exposed' photos strike me as typical tourist or post card photos. They are great to recall where you traveled and what you saw. They would proudly go into a family album.

On the other hand, the high-key 'mistakes' evoke an ethereal emotional response from me. These are photos that cause me to pause and study them and examine my own response to the photos.

Exactly what I felt.
In my film days, I struggled and finally more or less stopped trying to improve my high-key shooting abilities. Experimenting just took too much time and money.

Most (or all) my good high-key pictures were not intended to be high-key.
