New dslr user going on vacation

Although I've taken photos for many years with point and shoot cameras I purchased a K-5IIs a few months ago and am going to Ethiopia in October. I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for what I should take. I will be going for three weeks to the northern and southern parts of Ethiopia and will visit churches, see wildlife, go hiking in the mountains, and see the Omo valley tribes. Lots of varied subjects and shooting conditions.

I have a Pentax 40 limited, Pentax 50-200 WR, Sigma 10-20 DC HSM 3.5, and a Sigma 18-250 Macro HSM 3.5-6.3. Which of these would be best to take?

Wow! sounds like a terrific trip. The 40 will be good for portraits among other things, and the Sigma 10-20 for landscapes and cityscapes and architecture (if you get to visit any of those amazing churches and monasteries. In your position, I'd lighten my load by taking only one of the longer zooms. and of course an extra battery, many spare SDHC cards, a comfortable neck strap and wrist strap, polarizers and graduated ND filters. Have fun and don't forget to post the results!

I would go out between now and the trip and put the 18 - 250 zoom to the test. Shoot with it under as many different lighting conditions as you can, especially low light and especially at the ends of its range. THen ask yourself if you're satisfied with the image quality you're getting. If you are, things will be a lot simpler by taking only the one lens. I have the Pentax 18 - 250 (not the same lens, I think the Pentax is made by Tamron) and the image quality from mine is quite good. To the extent that it falls short, that has to be weighed against the convenience of never having to change lenses.

Take a rocket blower and a pentax sensor cleaning kit (O-ICK1 39357) with you. The sigma 10-20 can certainly produce great results, but will be hard work to carry around. I have started leaving my 10-20 behind when travelling and mine's the "smaller" version. It just attracts too much unwanted attention due to it's size and the need to get in really close, plus a tripod is needed to get the best results. From your lens selection, I would take the 18-250 and the 40 limited only.
Best of luck.

Ditto what Cal said. One thing you don't have is something quite fast. Maybe if you have some room in the bag/budget, I'd get a Sigma 30/1.4. It's pretty much all I use indoors. For less, an old Takumar 50/1.4 or K or M 50 1.4. They are great, and fast, but kind of long inside unless you have room to back up. Autofocus alternative would be the DA 50 1.8
