K-5, shutter will refuse to trip

At an agility trial this weekend but the owner has some hummingbird feeders so I did a lot of hummingbird shots as well as dog shots. While I got a good number of good hummer shots but when I transistioned to the dogs many of the shots were soft and it was not locking focus. This has not been a problem in the past (300mm prime, that lens rocks!).

To add insult to injury I'd hold the shutter button down and nothing would happen! I'd do multiple hits and usually nothing happened but once it would trip, if I manually pulled the trigger it would sometimes do a second and third shot (I have it set to rattle off multiple shots with one trip).

As I type this it occured to me the card was getting full so maybe it was a write issue? But the focusing problem should not be related to that if true.

Ideas? I have no idea how many pictures this body has taken; but well into the tens of thousands. So far, more robust than my K20. Tempted to score on a K-5ii or K-5iis and bench this one.

Is your camera in AF.S mode? If so, it won't shoot unless you set it to "release priority" rather than "focus priority" in the menu. Alternatively, use AF.C or MF.

Oh man, that's it. Somehow it had been moved off of C. Thanks, that was driving me nuts. I've caught this before but for some reason I missed it again.
