Lens selection question for gift

I'm buying a K50 as a gift for someone who has done film photography as a hobby.
The lens they used 90% of the time previously was a film 45mm.

The 18-135 kit lens seems really versatile but a little spendy for me, I'm wondering if the standard 35mm Pentax lens would be a better fit and maybe later they can select a more appropriate zoom lens/range for themselves.

Any thoughts?

Maybe grab a B&H or Adorama gift certificate? That way they can grab whatever lens they want and maybe throw some cash towards it if they want something larger?

The "plastic wonder" DA35mm f 2.4 is very well-regarded. it gives a similar field of view on APSC as the 50mm lens did on 35mm film.
It's inexpensive and a nice piece of kit. The 18-135 is a fine zoom, and weather-sealed. It can be had for around $300 used, but perhaps that's something he should decide.

I know if I got a K-50 with 35mm as a present, I'd be quite pleased.

Agree w/ Ter-or. Either the plastic 35mm or 50mm seem about right and they're great deals right now packaged w/ the k-50 sale going on.

If their background usage was 35mm film and 45mm lens--the closest option would be a 28mm lens--believe the FA 28mm lens would be good.

A longer 35mm focal length is about equivalent to 52mm vs 42 mm for a 28mm lens. Also a zoom of poor handling quality may be a real shock--it was for me!

If 28mm lens is not available a 35mm is likely the best alternative w/o spending a lot (as on the "limited lenses").

Also the lens should show distance, have an aperture ring, and depth of field, to really be a stepping stone from film to digital. That means likely an FA lens--either 28 or 35mm. 28mm as I said is perhaps closest to ideal from your scenario.

I was looking at deals on Adorama for a friend last night, they have the K-50 without a lens for 499 and with the 18-55 for 569, plus several lens that you can bundle with the camera, the 35/2.4 for under $150 plus some others. That 18-55 may not be the best lens, but a WR lens for $70 is hard to pass up.

That WR 18-55 is almost a must have first choice for a first lens imho. I am slowly building my collection of limited, but I love the fact that I also have the 18-55 WR so that even if it is bucketing down I can nip out and take some shots with much better IQ than would be expected from such a cheap lens. Also, why the K-50? Is the K-30 hard to get these days? I paid 400 dollars for one about six weeks ago.
