Battery Question

How long can I expect a freshly charged DLI109 (K50) battery to hold a useful charge when not installed in the camera? Thanks

For a while! One of my K10D batteries lasted for over a year as far as I recall.

LiON batteries tend to have a fairly high self-discharge rate when sitting idle. The operative phrase used was 'useful charge'. Even with self-discharge, most LiON batteries won't dip below roughly 40% capacity in good storage conditions. So the battery will be usable after sitting in storage, but how many shots you get after sitting for many weeks or months is a different issue.

If you think your camera will be sitting on the shelf for longer periods without a chance to top off the batteries before heavy use, you may be better served by switching to Sanyo eneloop batteries. There are charts online showing eneloop batteries sitting for upwards of two years with very little self-discharge.

I realize my question was a little broad so I'll try to narrow it a little. I'm really interested in knowing it will hold approximately 90% of it's charge for appromimately 4 weeks when I use it as a backup while traveling. Thanks.

Maybe, with a higher probability if it is new. For sure 80%+, unless its past use exceeds more than half of its rated number of recharge cycles.

That is why I carry a minimum of two spares when traveling for extended times. At least one goes on the charger as soon as I check into any hotel but if they drain down a bit, I have spares. The after-market batteries are so cheap it just doesn't make sense not to have multiples.

I see after-market batteries on Ebay. What after-market batteries are considered the most reliable?
