Firmware update

Hi every one - I've only just registered so this is my first post and if an old story I appologise in advance.
I have just bought a K30 (new) and it has the original version of the firmware installed - 1.00.
On the Pentax site it states to update this I need a 32Mb card to transfer the software from a computer download.
Is this correct as the file size does not appear that big?

Thanks for you input.

That is megabytes, not gigabytes, a 32mb card would be useless for anything but a firmware update, most cards these days are a minimum of 4096mb. I think unpacked the firmware is around 15mb, I guess they figured that would be cutting it close for a 16mb card and decided to tell people to use a 32mb or larger. I doubt anyone still uses cards that small anymore, but I guess they had to say something to have everything covered.

Did they ever make SD cards that small? I think I remember having a 256mb one at one time.

Supposedly they made 1mb cards, but I've never seen one, I had Smart Media cards at that time and those were available even smaller than 1mb. The smallest I have now is 128mb.

I think they mean 32MB minimum. Just use your regular SD card. Shouldn't hurt to try.

I actually updated with a 32MB card once! It was an old card I think came with a old Pentax compact.

You can update with any card that the camera supports. 32Mb is the minimum but all cards these days are well over that (i.e. 8Gb, 16Gb, 32Gb, etc).

Not many more on a K-5, that is why I use it for a live Linux install with a few tools on it, since pretty much any computer with an SD reader is capable of booting from it.

OK - the jokes on me.
I misread the size of the file on the Pentax support site and it's so long since anything was measured in Mb I must have been word blind to it.
Goes under the heading - "what was he thinking".
Thanks for the induction ceremony.

I know I've seen the same confusion before, so you are not alone.

Yeah, you are by far not the first person to have this issue. I wish Ricoh would change the wording on that it is unclear, especially for people who are not into computer speak.

And welcome to the forum by the way! Hope you stick around, it is (mostly) a very friendly place with an incredible wealth of information.
