Pentax K-30 + prime?

Hi,

I'm buying A K-30 next month with the 18-55 WR lens. The shop I'm buying from
is offering a Pentax DA 50mm F1.8 for 50 ($80) if bought at the same time.

I know this is a really good price for this lens, ,
but as a first time DSLR owner will it be

a) difficult for me to use?
b)useful in helping me to learn about DSLR photography?
c) too similar to the kit lens?

I live in Istanbul and take 1000's of P&S photo's of anything that catches my eye,
but especially cityscapes, architecture and street life.

Any advice/opinions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Stuart

The 50mm is sharper and 3 stops faster than the kit lens. It can give you better bokeh if you do a lot of portraits or close-ups. At that price you shouldn't hesitate to get it IMO!

Having a prime helps to train your photographic eye also

Take the deal.
As Adam said three stops matter. The next half stop is expensive.

Thanks for the speedy replies - the camera will be a Christmas present to myself, anf the prime will be the present from the family!

Solid advice on getting a prime.

I would like to suggest that you also take a look at the DA 35 2.4 instead of the 50mm. It provides a bit of a wider field of view. It can still be used for portraits, but also for street shots and landscapes. It's also a touch cheaper than the 50mm.

Either way, the kit lens + one of those primes will make a solid 1-2 combo that can help you decide what type of photography you like doing most and what gear you will need in the future.

Really try to get the 35/2.4 instead of the 50/1.8 for the deal. Or just screw that and get both!

I use 55mm most of the time so there is nothing that says you must feel more natural with a wider lens.

Lens for K-30

You really have no use for the 50 1.8, but you can buy it for $80, mark it up to $100 plus freight, and sell it to me!

Thanks for all the advice - I've been checking around a few Pentax Pro dealers in the UK and several of them have this
deal going on the 50mm - my shop tell me they can't swap the lenses in the deal around.

So I'll be buying the 50mm and as Ivanvernon points out I'll be able to recover my costs if I don't use it
