35mm f/2.4 lens too 'tight'?

Using a Pentax 35mm f/2.4 lens on my K-01. Bought it recently. Started trying manual focus -- and noticed that it's hard to turn the manual focus ring. It turns, and it works, but it just isn't easy and smooth like on my old Pentax-A 28mm f/2.8.

Is this normal, or is it a defective lens? In auto-focus, it works perfectly. The images are VERY sharp... except in low light, when it hunts around and often stops on a spot that is out of focus... on a second try, it usually gets it right. But I'm wondering, if the lens is too 'tight', does this make the autofocus hard to work right in dim light?

If anyone has a 35mm f/2.4 lens, could you put your camera on manual focus, then turn the focusing ring, and let me know if it's hard to turn?

you have to desengage AF on the body or you will damage your lens !

the 35/2.4 focus ring is very smooth, and should give the feeling of rotating on a velvet carpet.

It should be quite smooth and probably less dampened than your manual lens. You sure you're moving that AF/MF switch all the way?

No quick-shift, so with the af screw drive engaged you risk damaging the lens and/or body.

So, turning focus ring without turning AF switch to MF can damage:

1. Lens.
2. Camera.
3. Both camera and lens.

I though it is harmful only to the camera.

Thanks!

I used the AF/MF switch properly... and all the way. The lens feels the same on both my K-01 cameras, so I'm ruling out the camera as a problem. And -- to be fair -- the autofocus works correctly. Its just the stiffness of the manual focus ring that's bothering me.

Can't send it back to the Amazon vendor -- its been more than a month since I bought it. Does Pentax have a repair service in the USA, hopefully in southern California? I'd like to get the lens checked, even though I probably won't use it on manual focus very much.

the more i think about it, you might be right for standard screw drive lens's, but i'm not sure how the SDM and DC ones work. but either way, it's not something i'd do every day.

Try moving the focus ring when the lens is dismounted, off-camera?
I think the focus ring on the DA 35mm f2.4 should be smooth, fiddly even. Similar to the DA L kit lenses, its not as dampened as a limited's focus ring or the focus ring of old manual lenses. I would not describe the focus ring on my DA 35mm as tight or stiff.
Of course, keep in mind that the first few times you use it the lens is still fresh out of the factory. Lenses loosen up a bit and "get into the groove" over time. But if it is uncomfortable stiff and still in warranty, send it in.
I think in the US the repair place is CRIS, but there might be alternatives.

In praise of CRIS
Thanks for your comments, above. Learned from your posts that my focus ring should not be tight, so I sent my Pentax 35mm f/2.4 lens to CRIS in Chandler, Arizona.
The lens arrived there on December 2.
In repair -- December 3.
Quality assurance -- December 5.
Repair completed -- December 5.
Shipped back to me -- December 5.

That's FAST service! Cost to me? $12 to cover shipping... and $0 repair cost, as Pentax, CRIS, and I all agreed that this would be a warranty repair. I didn't have to argue about warranty coverage... CRIS just made the repair. Done.

The lens is smooth now when I go to manual focus. Smooth and precise. And auto-focus works better too, doesn't hang up in low light when wide open, which it used to.

It's back now... back on my K-01... working the way it should be... the way CRIS made it!

If you haven't checked out this excellent Pentax-designated repair service, take a look at www.criscam.com ... you know, it's like a good car mechanic... hope you never need one, but when you do, you are so glad they are at hand ... 1.800.799.0293 ... customerservice@criscam.com

CRIS -- recommended!

And, also, thanks to Ricoh/Pentax, for working with such an efficient repair service. For giving my inexpensive 35mm lens the same fast attention ... and quality repair ... that I'm sure you deliver via CRIS to owners of the much more expensive lenses. A class act!
