Filter access door?

I'm assuming this isn't Pentax-specific, but when I got a new-to-me K-x, I noted that there's a little door on the kit lens hood (PH-RBA). I've been searching and think it's called a "filter access", but why? I can't imagine you can actually remove and replace filters with the hood in place, and it's too small to permit a square filter like a Conkin. The only use I could fathom is to permit turning a circular polarizer.

So what's it for?

It's for a circular polarizer so you can fiddle with the polarizing as you rotate the front element of the polarizer.

Or a variable ND filter. Or a grad filter. Or a special effects filter (stars, multiple/split images, etc).
