Camera firing by itself

Not sure if this is the right place to put this.

My son is having trouble with his Canon 6D where sometimes it fires the shutter by itself without even touching the camera.
Has anyone heard of this ?
He's wondering if it's a repair job ?

Like Hal in 2001, the camera has taken over control.

Um.. I don't know much about Canon.. but there are some general DSLR steps you can take..
Charge up the battery and leave it outside for a couple hours. Maybe even try a different battery altogether, batteries can often be the cause of odd problems.
Update the camera firmware to the latest one.
In the menu, there is probably a "reset to factory defaults" function - try this, it might fix settings you didn't know were in effect.

Other considerations: Is there a lot of static in the environment? Is there a universal remote being used nearby? Is the shutter button damaged/wobbly? Interval mode or timer disabled?

Also, make sure your kid is not playing tricks on you to get you to buy him a Pentax

Maybe he got something like "smile shot" activated? With this mode the camera fires when it sees a smile (or something similar). This would only be possible in Live-Mode.

The shutter will only fire if the button is stuck or failing or if the button has gotten wet

Maybe stray IR signals? Are there any other IR devices in use at the time this happens? Wireless headphones, printers with IR port etc.

Or get an EMF (ghost) detector. Maybe the camera is "haunted" and you can sell it for big bucks on eBay. "They're heeere!"

For fun search on the keyword "haunted" on eBay.
